Essential Checklists and Action Plans for Family Safety

Severe Thunderstorm Preparedness

  • Before the Storm:

    • Stay informed through weather alerts and local news.

    • Prepare an emergency kit with essentials (water, food, flashlight, batteries).

    • Secure outdoor items that could become projectiles.

    • Check and reinforce windows and doors.

  • During the Storm:

    • Seek shelter indoors, preferably in a basement or an interior room.

    • Avoid windows and doors.

    • Listen to weather updates on a battery-powered radio.

  • After the Storm:

    • Stay indoors until it is safe to go outside.

    • Check for damage and report hazards to authorities.

    • Stay updated on further weather warnings.

Tornado Preparedness

  • Before a Tornado:

    • Identify a safe location in your home (basement, storm cellar, or interior room).

    • Create a family emergency plan and practice it regularly.

    • Have a weather radio or app for real-time alerts.

  • During a Tornado:

    • Go to your designated safe location immediately.

    • Protect your head and neck with your arms or a sturdy object.

    • Stay away from windows and doors.

  • After a Tornado:

    • Wait for the all-clear signal before leaving your shelter.

    • Check for injuries and provide first aid if necessary.

    • Avoid downed power lines and report them.
